Project Overview:
We were commissioned by the owners of Vanilla Hair & Beauty Salon to transform the frontage of their shop with high-quality block paving. The objective was to create a durable, aesthetically pleasing driveway area that complements the shop’s exterior and provides a safe, accessible parking space for clients.
Preparation:
The first step of the project involved preparing the ground for the new block paving. The existing surface was excavated to an appropriate depth to allow for the necessary sub-base and block paving layers. This was done to ensure the area had sufficient stability and drainage, preventing future settlement or water pooling.
Once the area was cleared, we installed a geotextile membrane to separate the sub-base from the underlying soil, reducing the risk of soil contamination and maintaining the integrity of the structure.
Sub-Base Installation:
To provide a solid foundation for the paving, a sub-base layer of compacted MOT Type 1 aggregate was installed. This material is vital for ensuring that the paved area remains level and durable, even under the pressure of vehicular traffic. The sub-base was compacted using a vibrating plate compactor to create a strong, even surface.
Edge Restraints:
With the sub-base in place, edge restraints were installed to frame the block paving. We used durable kerb edging blocks in a contrasting light grey color. These restraints were carefully aligned and bedded into concrete to ensure they would remain secure and prevent the paving from spreading or shifting over time.
Block Paving Installation:
The primary block paving material chosen for this project was a high-quality black block with a smooth finish. This was complemented by light grey blocks that formed a decorative border and an intricate central pattern, which was designed to enhance the shopfront’s visual appeal.
The blocks were laid in a herringbone pattern with a diamond design in the middle, providing both strength and an attractive finish. The light grey border provided a sharp contrast, enhancing the neatness of the overall layout.
